I read a blog post today on Capturing Character Voices. I actually go through capturing my character's voices by simply writing a short piece in first person. Let them ramble on about everything & anything. Sometimes I end up with entire short stories based on their previous experiences. Might not actually end up in whatever I'm working on, but it's useful just the same. Any exercise in writing should probably be considered good practice.
